Quote of the Day

“Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.”

— Abraham Lincoln in his first Annual Message to Congress, December 3, 1861.

  1. For clarity sake, let’s just realize he was not talking about government employees.

And I like this one from Lincoln:

“You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.”

    1. Lincoln also said:

“The legitimate objective of government….to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but cannot do, at all, or cannot, so well do, for themselves-in their separate, and individual capacities.” (Shafritz, J.M. & Russell, E.W. 2005, p. 11)

  2. I would love to understand where James Booth gets all the subtext for famous quotes that somehow excludes public employees where no such documentation exists. The bias is ridiculous and unsupported

  3. James Booth looks for anything which will fit his preconceived narrative.

The misquote that Booth used is one that got its start a long time ago:

    http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/l/lincoln-quotes.htm

“Alleged quotes from Abraham Lincoln about the poor, the weak, prosperity, workers, class hatred, and character.

    The Truth:

These words are often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, but according to the book ‘They Never Said it: A Book of Fake Quotes, Misquotes, & Misleading Attributions’, they are not from Lincoln.

The quotes were published in 1942 by William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian minister. He released a pamphlet titled Lincoln On Limitations, which did include a Lincoln quote, but also added 10 statements written by Boetcker himself.

    They were:

    1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

    2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong

    3. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.

    4. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

    5. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence.

    6. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.

    7. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.

    8. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.

    9. You cannot establish security on borrowed money.

10 You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they will not do for themselves.

People who got the pamphlet thought the 10 statements were written by Lincoln and they have been distributed widely under Lincoln’s name.”

Que lastima, Jaimito. AS IF your credibility around here wasn’t already next to non-existent.

  4. Anyway, regarding the whole [WTF] “Lincoln wasn’t talking about government employees” subtext thing, try to keep in mind that James is just THAT odd.

Funny thing is, he thinks he’s being clever.

Best thing to do is ignore him.
